Need Advice For Drift Build - $800 Budget

16 Replies, 7819 Views

Looking for some advice on a good drift build for around $800. I have no experience with drift other than what research I have done but want to invest in a good chassis I can grow with.

I would rather fork out the extra money for a nice build to begin with than over spending to upgrade an RTR in the future.

If anybody has good recommendations for a chassis build, let me know!

I have been looking at the MST MS-01D Pro Kit chassis but have absolutely no idea what motor, esc or servo to get.

http://atomicmods.com/mst-ms-01d-pro-kit/ (If this is even available)

I know I want a brushless sensored motor - I have been looking at this combo:

ESC: G Force TS-90
Motor: G Force Raijin 10.5T

http://www.gforce-hobby.jp/products-en/G0205.html

Any thoughts?

A nice high speed servo seems to be a must so, any recommendations on that would be nice.

Some suggestions across the internet seem to point to a OMG Low Profile Digital Servo?

Also, Transmitter suggestions? Something nice enough to get the job done but not completely worthless?

??? ---> http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...ouse_.html  <--- ???

I could splurge for a $100 Transmitter W/ Receiver but I still have to get batteries and battery charger.

I have been looking at the SkyMax B6 charger and the Gens Ace 5000 mAh 50C/ 7.4V / 2S LiPo batteries.

I think I prefer Belt vs Shaft Drive but 4WD and RWD is completely open to suggestions!

Regardless of any of this, whatever you guys might think would make a great, dependable drift chassis from your experience, I'm all ears.

I appreciate any info you guys can provide!

You seem to have done the homework. All your initial choices are on the money. I have have an MS01D PRO myself. I also recommend the XXX PRO HT. On the Electronics department you can also look at Speed Passion Drift Series motor and Reventon 1.1 ESC they are fairly priced and give great performance. A motor of 10.5T for drift is overkill but you can always tone down the settings. 17T is more than enough. Servo, if you can get your hands on an OMG good, i also recommend PROTEK they are cheaper than OMG and as good. Check AMAIN HOBBIES website. You can buy de 150SS for $50 i think. Thas what I got and is extremely fast and has high torque too. These are my 5 cents. Good luck with your build and post photos once completed.
Best!

Davidarq,

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate the info! I had looked at the Speed Passion Motor and ESC Combos but didn't know how good they were. I had wondered if 10.5T was a good choice, someone on YouTube recommended a 8.5T so I guess that would have been very inappropriate!

Thanks a lot for the servo suggestion I had no idea what to do there.

Since you have a belt and shaft driven drifter do you prefer one over the other?

And what about RWD or CS? Both of your chassis are CS correct? (Isn't CS = 4WD?)

After considering $800 for a chassis build, this RMX-D VIP eBay listing caught my eye:

With Motor and ESC: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MST-RMX-D-VIP-4W...SwoydWsdSe

OR

With Servo and Upgrages: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MST-RMX-D-VIP-1-...SwnLdWszEp

Comes with what seems to be a decent 13.5T motor and ESC?

The other includes a servo and some other upgrades?

Not sure what the advantage one is over the other. The one with a servo has had 5x as many sales apparently - advantage?

Would still have to buy a servo with one and the other, I could just buy a Speed Passion Reventon 1.1 Motor/ESC Combo?

Like this perhaps? ---> http://www.ebay.com/itm/Speed-Passion-Re...Swn8FXRnHS

It seems like the main investment is in the chassis and then you can upgrade the components as you go.

Also, every chassis I have been looking at is either "Out Of Stock" or "Discontinued" so this is tempting.

It looks more like $1000 after everything including batteries and a transmitter.... Just tell me, is drifting RC something you only grow to like even more? Or is this insane?  :xD:

Thanks again!

No problem. I like belt a lot more than shaft, but the difference is barely noticeable. The RMX sounds and looks like a great rig in fact, I want one for myself. The deal with the servo is good, you might end up changing it later but that would do the job for starters. Make sure the reventon Motor ESC set is the DRIFT SPEC. It's the same price.
Also, 1000 does not sound crazy, you will spend less mo ey in upgrades which will save you money in the long run.

Based on what you guys have suggested so far I am looking at these items right now:

If that's true then should I get the 13.5T or 17.5?

13.5T: http://www.ebay.com/itm/201610873829

17.5T: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Speed-Passion-Re...SwjXRXbjk6

If I can tone down the settings then would it be better to have some headroom? Or do you already have to tone down the settings on a 17.5T?

Thanks!

Get the 13.5 and then you will adjust it down as you see fit.

Thanks David!

I appreciate all the help guys! I think I'm pretty satisfied with my selections.

Now I need a body. Do MST chassis work with Tamiya bodies? or where do I go for that?

And LEDs too!
