looking to get into drifting. Looking for an rtr car. Not sure I want belt or shaft. What one is better? Any help would be appreciated. I really like tinkering so something with options would be nice.
Belt vs shaft is always debatable. One isn't petter than the other, as much as they each have pros and cons.
Belt driven cars run the risk of breaking belts due to debris. Shaft driven cars are less likely to have issues with debris for the most part. Belt driven cars have a slight lag in power due to the belt stretching out a bit as you get on the throttle. Shaft driven cars are sort of prone to want to turn one way more than the other, due to the direction of the shaft's rotation being side to side. From what I gather, one has more options in CS adjustment with a belt driven car, due to being able to swap out a wide variety of pulleys. It seems as if gears for this purpose on shaft driven cars are a bit more limited.
Personally, I reccomend belt driven if you're gonna run on a clean surface. My rig is belt and I haven't had any issues with belts breaking. My word isn't the end-all answer though. For every person that prefers belt, I'm sure there's one who prefers shaft instead.
Thanks for the info. I think shafts are a better option for me then. I only plan to run in my buddies bar but you never know. Any thoughts on the HPI Racing RS4 Sport 3 RTR.
I don't know much about the RS4 other than the fact that it's steering system doesn't have slop the way the Sprint 2 does. I've used RS4 hop ups on my S2 and they worked out great, so I can't imagine the whole of the car is that terrible. But I'll let someone with more experience with that setup weigh in better Than I can. HPI does have good customer service and there's a fairly decent aftermarket for their cars. If the RS4 is anything like the S2, you should also be able to Frankenstein parts in from other types of cars when you wanna get fancy.
There are a couple threads about the chassis in the Hot Bodies/HPI chassis discussion section. Maybe check those out.
