I did it. Works great! You'll need some 4mm m3 screws for the top of the steering posts, and you'll need to bore out the lower holes on the c-hubs so the screws don't bind, but it's relatively easy to do.

Did you get more angle? You know how much more? Think the Sakura D3 gets 50-55 degrees. Been wondering if it'd get more or less on the Sprint 2 chassis.

I got a fair bit more angle. Haven't measured it though. More specifically it got rid of the slop on the left side. But yes, a notable difference. Too bad I still have the stock hpi servo. Sooo slooow.

Following your progress here. Very interested to know what improvements you have noticed.
Did you find the car handled better after the carbon chassis upgrade? Or is it more a cosmetic upgrade? Cheers, Jim (06-30-2014, 02:39 AM)Drift Jim Wrote: Following your progress here. Very interested to know what improvements you have noticed. Jim, After I got my FXX-D I immediately got hooked on RWD. Because of that the S2 D3 project has been on hold for quite a while now. The plan is to finish it up, but I haven't set a deadline for it. I am also already planning the next phase for it, playing with the idea of an RWD conversion. Regarding the carbon chassis upgrade, I haven't noticed much handeling wise, but the chassis is stiffer. A more experienced driver would probably notice some difference. I did the conversion mainly for cosmetic purposes. -K
Allright, I thought I'd share some progress shots of the D3 front conversion before I close this phase of the Sprint and move on to the next phase.

First some minor cosmetic changes. I changed most of the stock screws on the chassis from whatever they were before, to hex screws. The screws which doesn't have machine threads is still left stock because I haven't found a hex replacement for these. I swapped the stock orange aluminum parts, with the older stock purple Sprint parts. This was just to get a better color match with the pink D3 parts. Swapped the stock main/sub chassis mount with one from GPM, same reason as above. Threads fit unexpectedly well, even when not using GPM screws. Onto the D3 front conversion: Stripped everything except the the lower arms. Started with the steering swipers. Had to space it up a bit at the bottom to clear the lower arm. Used a bearing as spacer below the D3 steering post. From there it was on to fitting the c-hubs. They just had to be shimmed out a bit to remove slop. When mounting the steering knuckles, I noticed that they didn't have much room for camber adjustment. This was caused by the length of the CVDs, but it was easy to solve by removing the rubber o-rings in the one-way diff. This is how far I came with the conversion. Then I got the FXX-D VIP. :=S: The Sprint was unfortunate to be put on the shelf in the shadow of the excitement I had for the newly arrived RWD toy. While driving the FXX-D for some months now, not thinking much about the Sprint, I've now gotten some new ideas for it. The re-build has started, and I'm not that far away from finishing it up. When done I will update the list in the first post of the thread, along with documenting this phase of the build. Stay tuned! -K |
